Dating profile over 50, how to write one that sounds like you

A good dating profile over 50 does three jobs: it shows clearly what you look like now, it gives someone an easy reason to start a conversation, and it says honestly what you are looking for. You do not need to be a writer. You need recent photos, a few specific details and one clear sentence about your intentions.

Why your profile matters more than you think

Most people decide within seconds whether to read a profile, and within a minute whether to send a message. The good news is that the people reading yours are also over 40 or 50. They are not looking for perfection. They are looking for someone real, warm and clear.

Photos first

Photos are the first thing people see. Get them right and everything else gets easier.

  • Use photos from the last year or two. Nothing undermines a first date faster than looking different from your pictures.
  • Start with a clear, smiling head and shoulders photo in natural light. No sunglasses, no hat.
  • Add one full length photo, so people see the whole you.
  • Add one or two photos of you doing something you love: gardening, hiking, cooking, playing music.
  • Avoid group photos as your first picture. People should not have to guess which one is you.
  • Avoid photos with an ex cropped out. We can always tell.
  • Do not use professional glamour shots or heavy filters. Natural looks more trustworthy, especially on sites where scammers use polished stolen photos.

Ask a friend to take a few photos on a walk. Natural light in the late afternoon is the most flattering there is.

Your headline

If your site has a headline, use it for something specific and friendly. Retired teacher who still loves a good book club is better than Looking for my soulmate. Specific invites conversation. Generic gets skipped.

Writing your About me

The best profiles sound like the person talking. Read yours out loud. If it sounds like a CV or a greeting card, rewrite it.

A simple structure that works:

  • One or two sentences about who you are now. What you do, where you live, what fills your week.
  • Two or three specific things you love. Not I like travel, but I have been to Portugal three times and I am planning a fourth.
  • One sentence about the kind of person you hope to meet.
  • One sentence about what you are looking for: long term, marriage, companionship or friendship first.

Examples

Here is a short About me that works: I am a nurse in Denver, two grown sons, one very spoiled dog. Weekends are for the farmers market, long walks and trying to master sourdough. I would love to meet someone kind and curious who still likes to learn new things. I am looking for a long term relationship, no rush.

And one that does not: I am a fun loving, down to earth person who enjoys life, travel and good food. Looking for my partner in crime. No drama.

The second could be anyone. The first could only be one person.

Be honest about your intentions

At this stage of life, many people are clear about what they want, but some profiles avoid saying it. Be direct. If you want marriage, say so. If you want a partner but not to live together, say so. If you are widowed and want to start with friendship, say so. Clarity attracts the right people and saves everyone time.

On MatureMeet, every profile states one of four intentions: long term relationship, marriage, companionship or friendship first. You can also set dealbreakers.

What to leave out

  • Your ex. Bitterness about a past relationship is the fastest way to lose a reader.
  • Long lists of what you do not want. One or two dealbreakers are fine. A page of rules is not.
  • Your exact address, employer or details that make you easy to find. Share those when you trust someone.
  • Health details and money. Those are conversations for later.

Talking about divorce, widowhood and children

A short, positive mention is enough. Divorced, on good terms, two grown kids works. Widowed three years ago after a long and happy marriage, ready to enjoy life again works. Grandchildren are a joy to many people over 50, so mention them if they are a big part of your life.

Age and honesty

Use your real age. Some people shave off a few years to appear in more searches, but it starts the relationship with a lie and it always comes out. The right person wants someone their own stage of life.

Video and voice

If your dating site lets you add a video intro, do it. Sixty seconds of you saying hello, where you are and what you enjoy is more persuasive than any paragraph. Speak as if to a friend, in good light, somewhere quiet. Voice messages work the same way in conversation. Many people over 50 find talking far more natural than typing.

Common mistakes

Photos from ten years ago Better approach recent, natural photos
Sunglasses in every picture Better approach at least one clear photo of your eyes
Only adjectives Better approach specific details and stories
Negative tone Better approach warm and forward looking
No intention stated Better approach one clear sentence on what you want
Copy pasted from a template Better approach written in your own words

Keep it fresh

Update your profile every few months. Add a new photo, change a detail, mention something you have just done. Fresh profiles tend to get more attention, and it gives people something new to talk about.

Your first message matters too

A great profile attracts attention, and a good first message turns it into a conversation. Mention something specific from the other person's profile, add a little about yourself and end with an easy question. For example: I saw you walk the coastal path every weekend. I do a shorter version on Sundays. Which part is your favourite? Avoid one word openers like hi, which give the other person nothing to answer.

Checking your profile before you publish

  • Read it out loud. Does it sound like you?
  • Ask a friend whether the photos look like you today.
  • Check spelling and remove anything negative.
  • Make sure your intention is stated clearly.
  • Look at it on a phone screen, since most people will read it there.

Privacy on your profile

Use your first name only. Do not show your car number plate, your house or your workplace in photos. On MatureMeet profiles are hidden from search engines and you can browse in incognito mode, so you can be open on your profile without worrying who else might see it.

How long should it be

Aim for 100 to 250 words in your About me. Shorter than that and people have nothing to reply to. Much longer and they stop reading before the good part. If you have a lot to say, keep some for the conversation. A profile should make someone curious, not answer every question in advance. Break it into short paragraphs so it reads easily on a phone.

Getting help

Some people find writing about themselves hard. A friend can help, or you can ask a professional. On MatureMeet, VIP Concierge members get a profile review, photo guidance and a full profile rewrite by their personal concierge, as part of our matchmaking service for over 50.

Finally, remember that a profile is never finished. As you meet people and learn what draws the right conversations, adjust a sentence, swap a photo or add a detail. Small changes over time usually work better than rewriting everything at once.

If you are unsure about a sentence, ask yourself whether it would make you want to reply. If the answer is no, cut it or replace it with something specific. Warm, concrete and honest beats clever every time.

Ready to try it

Your profile is not a test you can fail. It is a first hello. Make it recent, specific and honest, and the right people will reply. When you are ready, start dating over 50 on MatureMeet with verified members and preview your matches near you.
