Dating romance scams, how to spot them and how we stop them

Dating romance scams are fake relationships built to get your money. The scammer uses stolen photos, builds trust over weeks, then asks for money, gift cards or crypto. On MatureMeet, members are verified and a scam shield warns you when a message shows these signs.

How a romance scam usually works

Most online dating scams follow the same script.

  • The first message is warm and flattering. The photos are attractive and often stolen.
  • They soon ask to move to another app, text or email, away from the dating site.
  • They have a job that keeps them far away: an oil rig, an army posting overseas, a ship, a contract abroad.
  • They say "I love you" quickly and talk about a future together.
  • Video calls never work. The camera is broken or the signal is bad.
  • Then a problem appears: a customs fee, a frozen account, a hospital bill, a ticket to visit you.
  • They ask for money, gift cards, crypto or a wire transfer, and promise to pay you back.

Dating site scams, the warning signs

If you see two or more of these, stop and talk to someone you trust.

  • They ask you for money, in any form, for any reason.
  • They ask for gift cards or for photos of gift card numbers.
  • They talk about crypto investments or offer to teach you trading.
  • They push you to leave the dating site in the first days.
  • They avoid video calls or meeting in person.
  • Their story has small details that change.
  • They rush you and make you feel guilty for saying no.
  • Their photos look like a model or a magazine.

How the MatureMeet scam shield protects you

  • Every member passes a selfie check matched to their photos and confirms a phone number before they can message.
  • New profile photos go through a reverse image check against known scam pictures and other accounts.
  • Every message is checked for money requests, gift cards, crypto, pressure to move off the site, urgent emergencies and the classic oil rig or army stories.
  • When a message matches, you see a clear warning before you reply.
  • You can report or block with one tap, and our safety team removes members who break the rules.
  • VIP Concierge members get reports reviewed within 2 hours.

A warning is a pause button, not a verdict. It gives you a moment to think.

What to do if you think you are being scammed

  • Stop replying. You do not owe an explanation.
  • Do not send money, gift cards, crypto or personal documents.
  • Tap Report on the profile or in the conversation.
  • If you have already sent money, call your bank or card company right away.
  • Report the scam to the police and to your national fraud reporting service.
  • Talk to a friend or family member. Scammers count on secrecy.
  • Be careful of "recovery" offers. People who promise to get your money back for a fee are often scammers too.

What about a romance scammer list?

People often search for a romance scammer list to check a name. Scammers change names and photos all the time, so a list is rarely enough. A better check is to ask for a video call and to search the person's photos with a reverse image search. On MatureMeet, the reverse image check runs on every new profile photo for you.

For families worried about a parent

If a parent talks about a new partner they have never met who needs money, take it seriously, but be kind. Shame makes people hide things. Share our guide to romance scam warning signs and our online dating safety tips. You can also gift a membership on a site where every member is verified.

Verification is the first line of defense

Scammers prefer sites where anyone can create a profile in a minute. Learn how our verified profiles make that much harder, and why we call MatureMeet a mature dating site for grown-ups.

Questions about online dating scams

How do I spot a romance scammer?

Watch for requests for money, gift cards or crypto, a job far away, pressure to leave the dating site, fast declarations of love and excuses to avoid video calls.

Can a romance scammer pass verification?

It is much harder. Every member must pass a selfie check matched to their photos and a phone check, and the scam shield still checks messages. No system is perfect, so never send money to someone you have not met.

What happens when I report someone on MatureMeet?

Our safety team reviews the report and the conversation. If the person broke our rules, we remove them. They are not told who reported them.

I already sent money. What should I do?

Call your bank or card company right away, report it to the police, report the profile and stop all contact.
